I'm Laurie White, co-host of the "Colorado Springs Morning Report" on Newstalk 1300 KVOR. I'd like to tell you why I had my Laser Vision Correction done at the Wright Eye Center.

I started wearing glasses in 2nd grade, went through numerous pairs of glasses playing volleyball, lost countless contact lenses playing basketball, and couldn't wait for the day that I got rid of glasses and contacts forever.

Real-Life LASIK Tour - Independence Day Screening

That day came on April 14, 1997 - my own personal Independence Day! That's when I went in for my complimentary evaluation and found out that the technology was finally available to correct my degree of nearsightedness and astigmatism.

When I went to the Wright Eye Center I was nervous. For years I had been told I was not a candidate for corrective eye procedures because of my extreme degree of nearsightedness and astigmatism. That day, I was told I was a great candidate! I left the Wright Eye Center happy as a clam, with instructions to not wear my contact lenses until my complete eye examination. I didn't even mind wearing my "pop bottle" glasses, because I knew it would be the last time I would have to!

Real-Life LASIK Tour - Friendly Examination

The day of my complete eye examination came quickly and I was amazed at how thorough the testing was. I think everything was checked! I enjoyed seeing my topography, because that view of my eyes was very different, and interesting!

The friendly staff and knowledgeable doctors answered every question. They realized I was a tad nervous, and were very reassuring. They made me aware of any potential risks, minimal but present, and were careful that I understood what was happening to me.

Real-Life LASIK Tour - The Big Day Arrives — Day of Surgery!

My right eye was scheduled on May 2, only 2 weeks after my initial screening! That morning it was difficult to concentrate at work - I was so excited. I had made arrangements with a friend for transportation, and even she got jazzed watching my excitement.
I arrived at the laser center and the room was full of people waiting, just like me. The room was quiet, but you could feel the underlying anticipation. I went into the pre-op area and was prepped, and I could feel my pulse start to quicken a bit. I don't know if it was the kind and caring staff, or the relaxing medication I had been given that put me at ease, but by the time I was given drops to numb my eye, I was READY TO GO!

I walked into the procedure room and was greeted with a smile from Dr. Wright. I reclined on the procedure chair and the doctor gently talked me through each and every step of the procedure.

I was never scared. Believe it or not, it was a truly pleasurable experience. I didn't experience any pain at all and the procedure was done before I knew it! I expected it to take much longer than 10 minutes...

Completely giddy, I was driven home by my friend with a patch over my eye to protect it. As I fell asleep that evening, I thought "I can't wait to open my eye in the morning!"

Real-Life LASIK Tour - The Big Day - Independence Day Arrives

The next morning my alarm went off, I sat up in bed, and took my shield off. I looked across the room into a mirror, and there I was...crystal clear and grinning from ear to ear!

At my 1 day post-op visit, the atmosphere was electric in the waiting room as the other "one day-ers" shared amazingly similar stories. I was 20/30 less than 24 hours after the procedure was performed. Even the doctor commented on how well my eye took the treatment. Still grinning from ear to ear, I went off to a remote and amazed all my coworkers with my excellent new vision!

I Can See! (laurie02.wav - 60K)

My left eye was done May 9 and I chose to be corrected for monovision. Today I can see 20/20 for distance, and my reading vision is great!

I took my children to the swimming pool this summer. I didn't have to wear those dorky goggles to keep my contacts from floating out of my eyes... and I was absolutely delighted to see the full length of the pool while swimming under water. Now is that cool*, or what!
