Less Dependence on Bifocals & Reading Glasses

As we grow older, our natural lens goes through changes. For some that results in cataracts. For others it results in a condition called presbyopia which causes the lens to lose elasticity. As the lens becomes more rigid, our ability to focus up close and at a distance is diminished. Until recently, that left us with little choice other than reading glasses or bifocals, but with the ReSTOR lens, the vast majority of people experience reduced dependency on bifocals and reading glasses. In fact, over 80% of those treated in clinical trials report that they no longer need glasses for any activity. They can read a book, work at the computer, drive and enjoy sporting activities without the aid of glasses.

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis in our laser and eye surgery center. The surgery takes about 10 minutes and the time at our surgery center is usually just a few hours from start to finish. Plus, the use of IV Sedation means little or no discomfort.

Once the procedure is done, the new lens stays permanently in place because of a natural bond created between the IOL and the capsule that surrounds the natural lens.

The AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL incorporates an apodized diffractive optic with refraction to achieve a wide range of quality vision. It's design utilizes a series of ridges ("step heights) that distribute the appropriate amount of light to near and distant focal points - regardless of the lighting situation.

The technology enables the lens to focus light correctly on the retina at various distances without any mechanical movement. The ridges (step heights) described above are 300 times smaller than the width of a human hair and the entire lens is formed out of foldable acrylic material making the entire procedure less invasive.
